Lizard Island
Lizard Island isn’t like the other islands. It’s actually a remnant of a mountain range that was once exposed above sea level. The remoteness of Lizard Island (240 kilometres north of Cairns) makes it a private and quiet escape that allows you to completely go off the grid.
Named for the goannas that thrived on the island when it was encountered by James Cook, the traditional place name is Dyiigurra/Jiigurru, and was once a popular place for Dingaal people to harvest shellfish, dugongs and fish. The island is also home to beautiful native birds, so you won’t be short of wildlife spotting to do on your visit.
Stretch out on the powdery white beaches, or snorkel in the crystal clear waters at this hidden holiday gem in Queensland–it’s bound to carry away your worries on the sea breeze.
