Tasmania Unleashed: GoPro Adventures Along the East Coast
In which I went on the Go-Pro adventure of a lifetime along the marvel that is Tasmania's East Coast.
Some trips demand to be lived in wide angles and high definition, every moment a blur of exhilaration, beauty, and adrenaline. A GoPro strapped on, a group of legends by your side, and the East Coast of Tasmania as your backdrop? Now, that is the stuff of adventure lore.
Sitchu recently journeyed with GoPro and Tourism Tasmania to explore and capture Tasmania in all its natural glory. From sky-high antics over the shimmering turquoise crescent of Wineglass Bay to 4.5-hour boat rides jam-packed with dolphins, whales, and a spilled oyster in a bag, we’re sharing how you can capture the best memories with the new GoPro Hero 13.
This wasn’t just a road trip. It was a full-throttle odyssey through one of Australia’s most breathtaking natural playgrounds.
Day One
Day one kicked off with a heart-pounding adrenaline rush. After leaving Launceston, we tackled the infamous Jacob’s Ladder at Ben Lomond National Park. Imagine the kind of mountain biking that has you gripping your handlebars for dear life, praying you don’t tip over. Okay, full disclosure—I chickened out within the first five seconds and handed the reins over to the Mountain Bike Tasmania and Go-Pro ambassador pros. But the view? Absolutely jaw-dropping. Rugged wilderness for miles, stretching into the horizon. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.
Next stop, Coles Bay. Water? Now that’s my element. After the biking drama, I was more than ready to hit the water. And honestly, when you’re paddling in the tranquil waters with the lovely team from Freycinet Adventures, with the pink granite peaks of the Hazards looming above and a sky so blue it looks like a postcard, who needs to worry about a puffy life vest and the curious “drying skirt” thing they make you wear?
After kayaking, we hit up Geographe Restaurant—just steps from the water—for a wood-fired pizza, seafood pasta, and a crisp local Chardonnay to wrap up a perfect day.
As the sun dipped behind the horizon, we made our way to one of the most breathtaking stays I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing—Freycinet Lodge. The eco-friendly luxury pods at the lodge blend into the landscape effortlessly, with each boasting a private deck and outdoor tub offering unrivalled views of the surrounding wilderness. Inside, the curved walls and Tasmanian oak details make for a cosy yet expansive retreat where privacy meets panoramic beauty in the most enchanting way.
It's safe to say I slept like a baby that night.
Day Two
Our second day unfolded like something out of a dream. Nature was our ultimate soundtrack. We kicked things off with a 4.5-hour cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys around Freycinet National Park, where we used every GoPro trick in the book to capture dolphins frolicking beside our boat, whales breaching in the distance, seals sunbathing on rocks, and the rugged, pink-hued granite cliffs towering above the ocean. The views were straight-up postcard material.
In the midst of all the wildlife action, I was laser-focused on getting some magical footage with my GoPro. But, as you’d expect from a girl who can't mountain bike to save her life, a few clumsy moments made their way into the mix. Case in point: while attempting to eat an oyster, I somehow managed to send it on an impromptu trip straight into my bag. No idea how it happened, but now I have a very "oyster-flavoured" memory from the day—talk about unexpected souvenirs!
Once we docked, we recharged in our luxe digs before setting off for the iconic Wineglass Bay lookout. The hike was a blast—laughing, chatting, snapping photos, and just soaking in the insane beauty of the place.
As the sun started to set, we gathered back at the lodge for dinner, where the sky turned shades of amber and lavender. Glasses of Tasmania’s finest wine clinked in the air as we swapped stories from the day, wrapping up one heck of an adventure. Back in my room, a soak in the tub was the perfect way to cap off a truly epic day.
Day Three
The final day was one for the books—though not without a bittersweet goodbye to the room of my dreams at Freycinet Lodge (and an especially funny receptionist who somehow made check-in-and-out feel like a comedy show).
Then it was time to take to the skies with Freycinet Air, a family-owned operation that let us soar two by two over Wineglass Bay and the stunning stretch of coastline below. The view was pure magic—endless blues, greens, and earthy tones weaving together in the most magnificent way. It was a gripping, seat-of-your-pants kind of flight, but the kind of thrill that leaves you grinning from ear to ear.
We wrapped up the trip with a stop at Devil’s Corner Winery for a farewell lunch. The Pinot Noir? Unreal. The oysters? Next level. The wood-fired pizza from Tombolo Freycinet? Don’t even get me started. The winery’s location is as incredible as its food, perched above vineyards with sweeping views of the coastline—an idyllic place to say goodbye to this magical corner of the world.
After a fond farewell, I was dropped off in Hobart by the amazing Tourism Tasmania team, who showed me just how much they love their home. Their enthusiasm is absolutely contagious, and I left feeling inspired and eager to return. If you ever get the chance to visit Tasmania, do it. You won’t regret it—I promise.
