14 Places to Go for Mulled Wine in Melbourne This Winter

Ward off the winter blues with a warm and spicy tipple at these cosy venues, known for making the best mulled wine in Melbourne.

Goldy's Tavern

Roaring fireplaces, cosy restaurants and a glass of hot mulled wine – it’s the little things that imbue joy into even the coldest winter night. Luckily for us, Melbourne’s bars, pubs and even cinemas are on board, dusting off their secret recipes and brewing big batches of toasty mulled wine for us to enjoy indoors and out. With each version sporting its own magical configuration of spices, fruit and wine, the only way to find your favourite is to go out and try them all.

Bar Clara

Bar Clara

Embrace the cosy allure of winter at Bar Clara, where the return of their renowned mulled wine promises to warm both heart and spirit. This season's offering blends rich red wine with a symphony of spiced syrup, cacao nibs, cherries, and winter spices, crowned with a refreshing hint of fresh orange.

87 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne

The Courthouse

The Courthouse

We love the retro Art-Deco nostalgia of this brilliantly refurbished North Melbourne gem. The tasty mulled wine on offer at The Courthouse pairs perfectly with the cool records spinning, art-laden walls, and inviting fireplace.

Sitchu Tip: We also highly recommend their sticky-date pudding. It's the best in Melbourne in our books.

86-90 Errol Street, North Melbourne

Monty's Bar

Monty's Bar

This small, unfussy gem is one of Fitzroy North's best kept secrets. Settle in at the bar, on the booths down the sides, even on a recycled church pew up the back and find a cosy escape from the cold this winter. The set of turntables beside the bar only add to the atmosphere - and their mulled wine is magically delicious, simply begging you to come inside and warm up your cockles. Available all week, all woolly season.

209 St Georges Road, Fitzroy North

Lido Cinemas

Lido Cinemas

Lido Cinemas is loved by movie buffs across the city for its diverse programming, gorgeous Art Deco architecture and next-level snacks. Vegan popcorn, classic cocktails, cheese platters from Milk the Cow and gourmet toasties with a side of Mt Zero olives – you won’t find nibbles like these at your average multiplex. While they offer boutique wines and craft beers all year round, every winter they fire up their crowd-favourite mulled wine, best enjoyed with an arthouse film or foreign cinema to feel extra cultured.

675 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn

Mjolner

Mjølner

Viking aesthetics, theatrical cocktails and mood lighting are a match made in heaven. Throw a delicious mulled wine into the mix and here's hoping you meet the perfect Alexander Skaarsgard. Mjolner's flaming glögg is a spicy mix of port, cranberry and cognac. You'll love the experience of watching the bartender build a stream of fire from out of the wine glass in front of your very eyes. Sip the warming drink with it's aromatic blend of house spices and ease into the night.

106 Hardware Street, Melbourne

Glou

Glou

Collingwood’s sustainable “wine dispensary” Glou will be serving their fabulous glühwein (the German version of mulled wine) from gorgeous, locally-made ceramic cups that will warm your hands in a huff. This year their recipe uses 2021 Orbis Shiraz from the McLaren Vale, a biodynamic drop that brims with dark fruit and bright acidity. They’re promising lots of fresh citrus and balanced spices in the final concoction, making it a delicious yet mature drink you’ll want to have again and again.

310 Smith Street, Collingwood

Atlas Vinifera

Atlas Vinifera

Chilly winter days herald the return of Atlas Vinifera’s house made mulled wine, and to that we say cheers. Spiced with orange, cinnamon and ginger, it’s a seasonal treat that can be enjoyed in a rosemary sugar-rimmed glass at the bar, or in a bottle to take away and sip at home in front of the telly. The cosy Richmond wine bar and shop has been a neighbourhood icon since day one, a place to discover vinos from every corner of the world over cheese and charcuterie.

274 Church Street, Richmond

Antique Bar

Antique Bar

Cold weather may be back, but that means Antique Bar’s toasty mulled wine is too. This year they’ve created a heavenly potion of red wine spiced with cinnamon, clove and citrus zest that’ll heat you from the inside out (and you can also buy a 750mL bottle for the home). Dressed in antique décor that exudes a warm, old timey ambience, this Elsternwick bar is a well-loved place to rendezvous all year round. Swing by for expert cocktails, tasty bar bites and service with a smile.

218 Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick

Riverland Bar

Riverland Bar

Don't let the chill stop you from dining outdoors, just pull up a seat under the toasty heaters at Riverland Bar. This waterside beer garden is the perfect winter pit-stop during a big day out shopping and exploring Melbourne's vibrant CBD. Wrap your hands around a hot glass of mulled wine, a perfect blend of red wine, spices and sugar. Or go one step further and slink deliciously into a boozy Biscoff cocktail, brimming with brandy, Licor 43, Biscoff, oat milk and cream, or the equally decadent Boozy Milo (hello dark rum).

Federation Wharf Vaults 1-9, Melbourne

Willows & Wine

Willows & Wine

Wine and literature, together at last. Add mulled wine into the mix and you've got the perfect story to tell, time and time again. Sink into a good book to match your spiced brew at Willows & Wine, order up a cheese plate and curl up for the long haul within its cosy surrounds. You'll want to leave with all the second hand books that line the shelves, and there's a selection of board games to incite some competitive fun. It's an altogether novel idea - and we're completely here for it!

315 Victoria Street, West Melbourne

Milk The Cow

Milk The Cow

With over 180 local and imported varieties beckoning from behind the glass cabinet, this fromagerie is a mecca for cheese lovers. In winter their fondue pots and baked camemberts fly off the menu, and what better pairing for such dreamy delights than a glass of hot mulled wine? They’re brewing their aromatic glühwein with aniseed, nutmeg, cardamom and hints of citrus from the 1st of June. You know where you can find us all winter long.

157 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda

323 Lygon Street, Carlton

Goldy's Tavern

Goldy's Tavern

Friends, families and four-legged friends are all welcome at this reincarnation of a legendary old-school boozer (the historic Leinster Arms Hotel), which has lovingly retained all of its unpretentious charm while gently nursing it into the modern age. Goldy’s Tavern's several dining rooms, bars and outdoor areas are a study in homey, kitschy mid-century Australian décor – with floral carpets, soft furnishing and vintage knick knacks to boot. There’s cold beers on tap and a cracking parma to dig into, but also forward thinking wines and food... and a $10 mulled wine proving completely irresistible to northsiders. Grab a steaming glass or three and a board game off the shelf, because this is the local gem you’ll want to linger at.

66A Gold Street, Collingwood

Low Key

Low Key

True to its name, Low Key is a relaxed neighbourhood bar often playing host to the post-work crowd and their friendly pups. Pieces by local artists line the walls, there's a lovely fireplace bundle up beside, delicious mulled wine come winter time, and a warm atmosphere that radiates as heartily as both the fire and the glögg. Cool, casual and under the radar, this is a great little date spot to sip on a hearty round of hot, spiced wine before hitting up Westgarth Theatre.

59 High Street, Northcote

Wesley Anne

Wesley Anne

The Wesley Anne in winter is synonymous with mulled wine – ask anyone around and they’ll tell you they’ve been doing it as long as they can remember. The mulled wine here is winter relief in a cup. Served at a steamy temperature, it’s deep with cinnamon and dangerously easy to sip. They’ll be serving it soon, so keep an eye on their socials to find out when you can pull up a pew and dive into a glass.

250 High Street, Northcote

Now that you've had your fill of the best mulled wine in Melbourne, it's time to plan even more winter adventures with our guide to the season’s unmissable events. Feeling hungry? Get cosy with these tasty Sunday roasts and our favourite ramen bars.
