With a focus on sustainability, they have a conscious and considered approach to the winemaking platform. The land surrounding has proven best for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. 

Sitchu Tip: Book ahead for their Summer of Music event program – they have amazing local musicians playing every Saturday and Sunday throughout January, so grab your friends and favourite picnic blanket and be ready for some sublime tunes and good times.

This fun and friendly Tasmanian winery is another favourite found just a five minute drive outside of Richmond, in the Coal Valley Region. The boutique Puddleduck Vineyard adhere to a very hands-on philosophy when it comes to crafting a delicious drop of wine.

You'll love their vineyard and winery tours, available weekdays between 10.30am and 2.30pm. It's an amazing chance to see behind the scenes of a working vineyard and winery, and you will even be given the opportunity for a sneaky barrel tasting of their yet to be released Pinot Noir or Chardonnay.

Back at Puddleduck's cellar door, lock in their premium Plumm glass wine tasting experience, best served with local cheeses.

Still hungry? Whether you need to refuel from a busy few hours exploring the Coal River Valley or are just plain hungry, Puddleduck have you covered with an array of delicious plates off their Pecking Menu. If it's a nice day, you can even bring your own food to enjoy in the charming outdoor areas that surround.

Mona's on-site winery and one of Tasmania’s oldest vineyards, Moorilla Estate is a must-try. It offers small-batch, premium wines made from estate-grown fruit. Moorilla's Chief Winemaker, Conor van der Reest, is considered a 'wild child' of the wine world, and he favours structural wines with new-world fruit and old-world complexity. His wines are crafted to reveal Moorilla’s terroir; you drink Moorilla and you drink the vineyard. All in all, what passes you lips will be a treat indeed, and you can check out the cellar door for a tasting or get sipping on the range at Mona's bars and restaurants. We're big fans of the Muse Syrah, Pinot Noir and Extra Brut.

A scenic 40-minute drive south from Hobart will land you in Flowerpot — a tiny dot on the map that boasts a population of 73, and a very delightful winery. Mewstone Wines specialises in premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, all of which can be enjoyed in the comfort of the architecturally designed cellar door. Floor-to-ceiling glass offers breathtaking views over the immaculate lawns, undulating vines, and across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel leading out to Bruny Island. For $25 you can enjoy a tasting of 8-9 wines (depending on the season) with locally sourced seasonal platters should you get peckish.

Stefano Lubiana Wines

A unique vineyard just twenty minutes outside Hobart, Stefano Lubiana Wines offers up one of the purest expressions of Tasmanian wine. Biodynamic and with a progressive, natural focus toward viticulture, these sixth-generation family farmers truly know how to produce some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the state. They have history and passion on their side, after all.

Amble on into their charming cellar door and fall quickly in love with their 2021 'Sasso' Pinot Noir.  

The Tuscan-inspired Estate also takes full advantage of the cascading views down the Derwent River, making it the perfect backdrop for an intimate wedding or bespoke event. Their onsite restaurant Osteria Vista's $95 set menu is also worth its weight in gold, with a seasonal focus on handmade pastas and the likes of Lydall lamb, served with radicchio, pecorino and balsamic and zucchini, labneh and salsa verde.

Exquisite all round, this is one of the best wineries in Tasmania to swill, sip and savour your way around.

Pooley Wines 

On the outskirts of the historic town of Richmond, only 20 minutes from Hobart, lies Pooley Wines, a family-owned vineyard that has been lovingly tended for three generations. The Coach House — nestled between the rolling vine-covered hills and a Georgian convict-built home, is where guests can pull up a pew and enjoy one of their signature drops. Specialising in Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir, the staff are avid storytellers and will happily share anecdotes about the wine-making process, growing techniques, and rich history of the property. That passion ensures it stands strong as one of the best wineries in Tasmania, time and time again. 

Visitors can indulge in tastings, local cheeses and charcuterie boards daily. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays they fire up the pizza oven, serving homemade wood-fired pizzas that also cater to gluten-free and vegan diets. Pooley Wines is an excellent way to spend a leisurely afternoon, and very family-friendly to boot.

Craigow Wines 

Cambridge's Craigow Wines has built up an international reputation over the years, for producing outstanding cool-climate wines. Their Chardonnay is particularly delicious. 

The Craigow land has also had a habit for attracting doctors with energy and a passion for innovation over the centuries. From newly-arrived Scottish doctor James Murdoch first being granted this land in 1822 to later generations of the Murdoch clan developing Craigow into a thriving country estate. To now, with current owner Dr Barry Edwards and his family having first planted vines on the sunny slopes overlooking Coal River back in the early 90's. The first Craigow Wines vintage was harvested in 1993 - and their wines have developed a strong, loyal appreciation ever since. 

Head there for a tasting on your next free weekend. Once a farm worker’s cottage, the wine cellar provides a charmingly scenic setting in which to taste the current vintages, with their marvellous drops a true reflection of the terroir of the Coal River Valley surrounding. The welcoming atmosphere is just an added bonus. Don't miss it.

Nestled on Tasmania’s north coast, Ghost Rock Winery not only offers sensational wines and dramatic landscapes but also a full-blown gastronomic experience.

House of Arras’ founder Ed Carr is the only non-champenois winemaker to receive a coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine Championships. It is no surprise then that House of Arras is a standout wine globally. Making the most of the ideal soil and climate combination that northern Tasmania affords, and produced using the traditional French technique, House of Arras wines can be enjoyed at its sister cellar door, Bay of Fires.  

Visitors can book one of several experiences from the Chardonnay Masterclass (90 mins) to the Sparkling Scholar (120 mins, paired with gourmet brioche sandwiches), to a Wine, Wildlife and Vineyard walk (120 mins). Each session is well-curated and expertly delivered. 

While you’re there, take a walk through the adjacent woodland and keep an eye out for the resident platypus.

Since 1986, Clover Hill has been dedicated to producing premium sparkling wine in the traditional method. 

Set in an architecturally designed, rammed-earth building in Tasmania’s northern Pipers River region, the ample indoor and outdoor seating provides uninterrupted views across the vines and out to the hills beyond.  

Sparkling wine tastings start from $20, while a multi-course meal and matching wines starts at $80.  

A curated selection of cellar door experiences includes workshops and masterclasses. While it’s hard to beat the location, they cater to those further afield with virtual tastings, too. Participants will receive wine shipped to their door before joining a delicious and educational Zoom session.
